Light Up a Wedding

There must be something magical about paper lanterns because I’ve been seeing them left and right at weddings! And I can see why! Look at these wedding shots with the lanterns. There definitely add that magical and romantic touch.

Pictures from Pinterest

I remember when paper lanterns used to be just white when it came for decorations. Now people use paper lanterns in all sorts of colors to jazz up their wedding to make it super playful. However, if the more romantic feel is what you’re going for then definitely stick with the white because its a classy color to use.

Want to personalize your wedding even more? Then here is a small diy tip! Cut out small circles from colored tissue paper and glue them to your paper lanterns. This creates an easy pop of color that can match your wedding theme!

We have all seen the batman cakes; but what about the sidekicks?  My son’s favorite character is Batman’s sidekick Robin.  So, of course what kind of cake would he order for his birthday?  Robin!

KB Kakes aka Kathy/Mom/Grandmommy did a fabulous job on this cake!  Check out the muscles :)

When I hear the words Whoopie Pies, I think immediately of a dear, dear friend,  Robert Pickard.  Our girls called him “Uncle Robet”, as the letter R is not pronounced in Maine; unless of course a word ends in the letter A and then the A is dropped and a ER added!  So idea would be come an ideer!! :-)

Robert was born, raised, lived and died on hill on the outskirts of Bangor, Maine known as Hermon.  Most all the Pickards lived there!  The street he lived on is now referred to as Pickard Lane.  Robert was one of  kind!  A hard working chicken farmer who loved and cared for his family, and anyone else who needed his help.  He and his precious wife, Sylvia,  took their young, new Pastor and wife, me and my dear husband, under there wings many, many years ago.  Our lives were made richer, fuller, and SOOOOO much more fun as a result!!!!

But one of Robert’s hidden talents was that he was the KING of Whoopie Pies!!!!!!!  We had great fun learning and making them with him.  If you wanted a new flavor, Robert would whip it up for you!  So as we celebrate Pi day today with Whoopie Pies,  KB Kakes will celebrate our dear friend Robert, who lost his battle with cancer 12 years ago this month.

Yesterday’s blog shared the controversy as to which state the Whoopie Pie originated in…well for us, it was and always will be MAINE!!!!  Thanks Robert!  We miss you friend!!

“Hands down the best whoopie pies in the world!! better than the Amish women in Lancaster, PA make!” Debi Powell

Tomorrow is National Pi Day, so in honor we will have Whoopie Pies! Below are images of KB’s super yummy famous whoopie pies. KB’s recipe originated in Maine where Erika was born.   We have gathered some interesting information for you about this treat for those of you who do not know or want to know more about the whoopie pie.

While considered a New England phenomenon and a Pennsylvania Amish tradition, they are increasingly sold throughout the United States.  According to food historians, Amish women would bake these desserts (known as hucklebucks, or creamy turtles at the time) and put them in farmers’ lunch pails or lunch boxes.  When farmers would find the treats in their lunch, they would shout “Whoopie!”   It is thought that the original Whoopie pies may have been made from cake batter leftovers.

The whoopie pie is the official state treat of Maine (not to be confused with the official state dessert, which is blueberry pie).

The world’s largest whoopie pie was created in South Portland, Maine on March 26, 2011, weighing in at 1,062 pounds.  Pieces of the giant whoopie pie were sold and the money was used to send Maine-made whoopie pies to soldiers serving overseas.  The previous record holder, from Pennsylvania, weighed 200 pounds.

Origin controversy

Pennsylvania, Maine, and New Hampshire all claim to be the birthplace of the Whoopie pie. In 2011, the Maine State Legislature considered naming the whoopie pie the official state pie.   The proposal received bipartisan support. L.D. 71, officially known as “An Act to Designate the Whoopie Pie as the State Dessert”, read “The whoopie pie, a baked good made of two chocolate cakes with a creamy frosting between them, is the official state dessert”.  The Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureauand other observers in Lancaster County, PA, note that the whoopie pie comes from the area’s Amish and Pennsylvania German culture – origins that are unlikely to leave an official paper trail – and has been handed down through generations.  Most likely, Amish groups that migrated to Maine brought the treat to the people of Maine.   Mainers assert that Labadie’s in Lewiston, Maine has been making the confectionery since 1925.   The now-defunct Berwick Cake Company of Roxbury, Massachusetts had been making the “Whoopee Pie” since 1931 and it is also claimed that the whoopie pie originated there in Massachusetts and spread both north and south. It appears though that German immigrants brought the predecessor of the Whoopie Pie to communities throughout the northeast.

The Maine Legislature eventually decided to declare the whoopie pie the official state treat, and chose blueberry pie (made with wild Maine blueberries) as the official state dessert.” (taken from wikipedia)
